WASHINGTON (July 18, 2025)—Humane Word Action Fund, formerly called Humane Society Legislative Fund, issued the following statement ahead of a scheduled July 23 congressional hearing on California’s Proposition 12.

Prop 12, as it’s commonly referred, is a state law that prohibits covered egg, pork and veal products from being sold in California if they are derived from farm animals raised in extreme confinement. In May 2023, the U.S. Supreme Court upheld the law, yet lobbyists from big agribusiness are now trying to gut California’s landmark law and to nullify the Supreme Court decision.

“Once again, some members of the House Agriculture Committee are attempting to overturn commonsense farm animal and public health protections, following the direction of mostly foreign-owned Big Pork rather than acting in the best interests of their constituents. Big Pork got nearly everything it wanted in the recent big budget bill, but it’s still not satisfied. They won’t stop until they crush any law that sets animal welfare standards in farming, even if it’s as basic as ensuring animals have enough room to simply turn around,” said Sara Amundson, president of Humane World Action Fund. “This is not a blue state issue as some in Congress want you to believe. In fact, voters and their elected officials in Arizona, Florida, Kentucky, Ohio and Utah are among those millions of Americans in 15 states who said ‘yes’ to stop cruel confinement practices of chickens, cows and pigs.”
