WASHINGTON (July 15, 2026)—Humane World Action Fund, formerly called Humane Society Legislation Fund, announced its endorsement of John Crawford for District 1 in the Tennessee House of Representatives. As the nation’s leading political animal advocacy organization, Humane World Action Fund endorses candidates based on their demonstrated commitment to animal protection, evaluating each candidate only on their record and positions on animal welfare issues.
“From cracking down on animal fighting rings to safeguarding our black bears and even ensuring emergency care for our heroic K-9 first responders, State Rep. Crawford has demonstrated a commitment to protecting animals in Tennessee,” said Jessica Hyder, Tennessee state director for Humane World Action Fund. “His record shows that he understands animal welfare isn't just one issue, and Tennessee is fortunate to have a legislator who consistently champions protections for animals across the board.”
State Rep. John Crawford has been a leader in the General Assembly on animal-related legislation. In 2025, he successfully championed HB 540, a landmark bill that allows animal fighting to be prosecuted under Tennessee's Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act. According to estimates, more than 40,000 people participate in organized dogfighting nationwide, and Tennessee law is now aligned with 10 other states—including Florida, Georgia, and Texas—in expanding RICO protections to address animal cruelty.
This year, he co-sponsored legislation that became law to reduce human-bear conflicts by enhancing public safety and supporting humane wildlife management, specifically preventing people feeding black bears. He also co-sponsored a bill that allows emergency medical services personnel to stabilize and transport law enforcement working dogs like K-9s injured in the line of duty without fear of liability or veterinary practice violations.
