Animal advocates urge congressional negotiators to reject pork industry segment’s attempt to undermine state protections for farmed animals
WASHINGTON (September 16, 2026)—The Senate Agriculture Committee advanced its version of the Farm Bill today, without the controversial Save Our Bacon Act in it, and Humane World Action Fund, formerly called Humane Society Legislative Fund, offers the following statement.
Sara Amundson, president of Humane World Action Fund, said:
"As expected, the Senate Agriculture Committee leadership pointedly refused to let special interests poison the Farm Bill with the problematic and polarizing Save Our Bacon Act, which could overturn the hard-won progress states have made for farmed animals along with hundreds of other state laws that help keep communities healthy and safe.
"The Senate may not have a floor vote on the bill. Instead, now the Farm Bill process could move into a more secretive phase in which Senate leaders would have to contend with the House’s version, which comes off more as a sprawling special interest wish list, with Big Pork’s Save Our Bacon Act still sticking around like the proverbial bad penny. We’re counting on lawmakers of every stripe to continue listening to the diverse and authentic voices of constituents, farmers and advocates who are counting on them to insist that the final version of the Farm Bill leaves this divisive and unworthy provision behind."
