Animals and their fate are on the ballot in every election, and 2025 was no different. Now that the polls are closed and most of the races called, we want to thank you for showing up to support pro-animal candidates and to tell you how animals won big this year.

Today is National Voter Registration Day, the nation’s biggest voter registration drive – where organizations across the country encourage citizens to update their voter registration.

On Tuesday, hundreds of thousands of Virginians headed to the polls and participated in the commonwealth’s primary elections. We at Humane World Action Fund, formerly known as the Humane Society Legislative Fund, were thrilled to see all our endorsed candidates advance to the general election. Now, we have less than 150 days to rally around pro-animal champions in Virginia.

With New Jersey’s June 10 primary elections behind us, we are delighted to report that some familiar names will grace the general election ballot in November, and we cannot help but conclude that pro-animal voters helped to make the difference. In the pivotal New Jersey governor’s race, voters chose Democrat Mikie Sherrill and Republican Jack Ciattarelli to run in November’s gubernatorial election. Both have been supporters of our humane agenda during their careers.

We have a new name—Humane World Action Fund—and an ambitious agenda, grounded in the mission we’ve pursued for several decades: to deliver positive and permanent policy outcomes for animals. We are as committed as ever to bringing laws into greater alignment with humane values—the values of kindness, compassion and fairness to all creatures. These are values we share with tens of millions of people not simply within the United States but throughout the world.

As we often say, every year is an election year. And every election gives us an opportunity to improve prospects for the lives of millions of animals. Last year, HSLF proudly supported 775 candidates up and down the ballot, and a substantial number of them—736, or 95%—won their races. Now, we’re ready to continue the fight in 2025, and we’re asking you to join us at the ballot box for animals, because with the new year comes a new set of elections for federal, state, and local offices.

In every election, animal protection is on the ballot. At HSLF we know that pro-animal policies are only enacted if we have humane candidates in office at every level of government—that is why we work so hard to get them elected—and that’s something that we couldn’t do without your help. Thank you for making your voices heard this year and thank you for your support.

Our democratic system and processes empower citizens to act on the issues they care about at the ballot box, and animal protection is no exception. For three decades, we have seen critical successes for animals at the state and local level that are the result of direct votes on ballot initiatives by engaged citizens.
